Total Defence Day 2007

On 15th of Feb every year, all schools commemorate Total Defence Day.
a) Do you think it is relevant? Why?
b) How do you think the commemoration of Total Defence Day can be made more meaningful and engaging for the students?
For more information on Total Defence, visit: http://www.totaldefence.sg/imindef/mindef_websites/topics/totaldefence/home.html

a) Yes. I think that it is relevant. This is because on this day, Singapore fall to Japan and we started to live in terror in the hands of the japanese. We have to let the later generations to remember this day as to let them know what happened to Singapore as we fall to the japanese on this day. This is also because we must protect our country and not to fall into other countries again.

b) I think that maybe schools should let students experience some of the things that happened at that time. The teachers should teach some of the important things about total defence and after that let them have a mini quiz about total defence.

Is History and the study of it necessary?

The study of History is just as important as the other subjects. History is a subject that tells us many things that happened in the past. As a Singaporean, we must all understand what happened to Singapore in the past. This includes the Japanese Occupation and what happened after that. How much Singapore suffered in order to become like now, a strong and small nation. Thus, the study of History is very important.
